The startup contest called my name twice

Top 10 of the Dream Factory Startup Contest, and the Top Female Entrepreneur award. Two certificates for a company built on a stubborn idea.

The pitch I brought to the 7th Dream Factory Startup Contest was, if I am honest, a stubborn idea wearing a business plan. The idea: dietitian care belongs in everyday Malaysian life, in homes and offices and phone screens, not only behind hospital doors. The judges had every reason to be sceptical. Healthcare startups are hard. Healthcare startups run by clinicians who learned business on the job are harder.

Standing in that room, I was aware of carrying more than my own company. Malaysia does not have a long queue of dietitian-founded businesses. When there are so few of you, every pitch quietly doubles as a referendum on whether your profession can do this at all.

They called my name twice

The first time was for the Top 10, out of all the new businesses competing. I remember deciding that was the ceiling, and being genuinely satisfied with it. A dietitian consultancy standing in the top ten of a startup contest already said everything I had been trying to tell a year’s worth of unanswered proposal emails.

Then they called my name again. Top Female Entrepreneur of the contest.

I would love to report that I received it with composure. The truth is closer to a long second of not understanding the words, followed by walking to the front while recalculating everything I believed about my own ceiling.

Two framed certificates now hang where the rejections used to live rent-free.

What awards are actually for

I keep them less as trophies than as receipts. Proof that a healthcare idea people once asked to receive for free could stand in a room full of startups and hold its own. Proof for the next dietitian, and the one after her, that this profession can build things: companies, teams, careers, and a different expectation of what our work is worth.

And proof for me, on the days the phone goes quiet again, that quiet phones are temporary. The work is not.
